Life doesn’t slow down just because we’re going through something hard. It doesn’t press pause when we’re trying to get our footing or give us extra hours in the day to catch up. I was reminded of this in January when I was laid off from my job.

The news hit me hard. I had put so much of myself into that job. Deep down, I knew layoffs could happen, but nothing prepares you for the moment you hear, “Your role has been eliminated.” It wasn’t just a job I lost—it felt like I lost a part of my identity, my work family, and the place that made me feel fulfilled.

I went through all the stages of grief, sometimes more than once—denial, anger, bargaining, sadness, and eventually, acceptance. But after a while, those emotions made room for something more powerful: the need to be resilient.

Because life didn’t stop when I lost my job. I still had to make doctor’s appointments for my kids, schedule dentist visits, get oil changes, cook dinners, manage homework time, and keep the household running. And on top of that, I was in the middle of trying to lose weight—a journey that comes with its own emotional and physical challenges.

The world didn’t give me a break, so I had to create space for peace, stability, and hope. That’s when I rediscovered the power of positive affirmations.

Why Positive Affirmations Matter

Positive affirmations aren’t just cute quotes or trendy phrases you see on Instagram. They are powerful tools that can help reshape the way we think and feel about ourselves and our situations. At their core, affirmations are statements that you repeat to yourself to challenge negative or unhelpful thoughts.

They help you:

  • Reprogram your subconscious mind to focus on what you want instead of what you fear.
  • Build self-confidence and self-trust when things feel shaky.
  • Shift your mindset to one of abundance, even when you’re surrounded by uncertainty.
  • Reduce stress by replacing negative inner dialogue with calm, empowering beliefs.

When I was applying for jobs, attending interviews, and trying to stay optimistic with no real clue how long the unemployment stretch would last, affirmations became my daily ritual. They helped me speak life into myself when everything felt drained.

My Personal Journey: Losing a Job, Finding Myself

Those two months without a job felt long. Each rejection email stung. Every “we’ve decided to move in a different direction” made me question if I was enough. But each morning, I would say out loud:

“I am capable. I am worthy. The right opportunity is on its way to me.”

And, I started believing it. Eventually, I landed a new position and I was so grateful—but even more grateful that I had learned how to stay emotionally grounded during the storm.

But job stress wasn’t the only thing weighing on me. Like many moms, I’ve struggled with my weight and body image. Trying to lose weight while managing a household is like juggling fire while riding a unicycle—it takes focus, consistency, and a whole lot of patience. There were days when I wanted to give up. Days when I felt like I wasn’t doing enough for myself or anyone else. But again, affirmations helped.

Instead of beating myself up, I began saying:

“I honor my body by taking care of it. I choose progress over perfection.”

This mindset shift didn’t just help me make healthier choices—it helped me be kinder to myself, which is a huge part of lasting transformation.

Life as a Mom Never Slows Down

Being a mom means you’re always on. Even when you’re tired, sad, stressed, or overwhelmed, the show must go on. You’re the appointment maker, the errand runner, the homework helper, the peacekeeper. There’s hardly ever a moment when someone doesn’t need something from you.

But you can’t pour from an empty cup.

That’s why affirmations have become such an important tool in my personal self-care routine. They remind me to check in with myself. To affirm my worth outside of my productivity. To remind myself that I’m doing a great job—even on the messy days.
